Cycling, the squad of Italy for the World Championships in Wollongong. Is it the worst national team in history? – OA Sport

Daniele Bennati, coach of the Italian national cycling team, has released a list of 15 called up for the Cycling World Championships which will take place in Australia in Wollongong on Sunday 25 September: the announcement took place during the event Jova Beach Tour which takes place in Bresso (in the province of Milan). Three riders will be ‘cut’ from this list and only on Monday 12 September the almost 42-year-old native of Arezzo will reveal the names of the ten final squads (8 owners and 2 reserves).

As widely expected, Alberto Bettiol will be the lighthouse of Italy. Not a serial winner, far from it, yet in his palmares there is the Tour of Flanders 2019. The CT clarified the hierarchies within the Italian team: “We await the last races in Canada and the stages of the Vuelta to make the final considerations, on Monday 12th we will unveil the 10 athletes officially summoned. Our training includes Alberto Bettiol one step above the others. Just below Ballerini and Trentin who will make a final test at the Tour of Luxembourg“.

Italy, useless to go around it, is not going to win the World Cup: frankly, if this happened, it would be one of the most incredible surprises in the history of Italian sport. In our opinion, the worst national team in history will be deployed in Australia. It is certainly not the fault of the CT, but of an agonizing movement, which year after year seems to move inexorably towards complete extinction. The names that could be called were these, yet a boy like Andrea Piccoloso perky in this part of the season, perhaps he would have deserved more consideration.

As already happened for the Europeans, Bennati has no problem keeping the bar of expectations very low: “We go to the World Cup to do well and we know we are not the favorites. However, we are counting on a motivated line-up, made up of riders who are well and healthy. We will do everything to return with a good result. Then we have to deal with reality. There are some elements that stand above all: Wout Van Aert, Tadej Pogacar, Remco Evenepoel, Mathieu Van der Poel and Michael Matthews who plays at home“. When the coach talks about a “good result”, what does he mean? Perhaps, at present, he would also put a signature on a top 10 …
