The Chinese government he imposed new lockdowns in several major cities of the country, to counter an increase in coronavirus infections: the new lockdowns are part of the so-called “zero COVID” strategy, which the Chinese government has adopted during the pandemic and is continuing to adopt, despite the serious consequences it is having on the national economy.

The new lockdown was imposed after the registration of about 1,700 infections, most of which in Sichuan province, mostly asymptomatic.

The new restrictions will affect millions of people in different parts of China, including Hebei province, the largest of those surrounding the capital Beijing, Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan province, the metropolis of Shenzhen, the fourth most populous city in China. China is one of the most economically and technologically advanced in the country, and other important cities such as Guangzhou, Dalian and Shenyang.

In the city of Dalian, the lockdown will affect over 3 million people and is expected to last five days; in Shenzhen it was imposed in four districts for a total of 9 million inhabitants, also in this case for a few days; in Guangzhou, a city of 19 million inhabitants in which only five cases have been registered, the authorities have instead introduced the lockdown in some parts of one of its districts until next Saturday.

Overall, the imposition of the new lockdown, in some cases limited to certain areas, has already led to the closure of schools, restaurants, commercial activities and entertainment venues and the reduction of transport.

Although the lockdowns are expected to last a few days, it is not excluded that the Chinese government will decide to extend them, as has already happened in the past. For example, a hard lockdownwhich lasted over two months, which caused protests and discontent among the millions of citizens forced into their homes for weeks, often with violent methods and without access to some essential goods.
